What is a StoryWalk®?
A StoryWalk® is part story, part walk. It is along any kind of path or trail. Along that trail are pages of a story at regular intervals. These stories are generally picture books aimed at early readers. The spaced out pages builds the anticipation of looking at the next page and training a reader’s eyes to first seek out the picture, then look for the words. The time in between each page also allows the reader to process what they just read and make predictions about what will happen next.
There’s also the added benefit of combining physical activity with the story. Not all young readers find it easy to sit still while reading or listening to a story, but that does not mean they are not paying attention. They might have legs that need to go go go! A StoryWalk® brings the best of both worlds together into something that could be better than each individually.
Where is this StoryWalk®?
Spaulding Memorial Library partnered with Loon Echo Land Trust and the Sebago Department of Recreation to develop this StoryWalk® on the Sebago Elementary School’s Together Walking Trail. Access the trail from the school’s parking lot at the end closest to Route 114. The beginning of the story and entrance to the trail is behind the gazebo at the Veteran’s Memorial park.
